The following is a letter written by Dr. Norris L. Newton Jr., M.D. on January 1, 2006. Dr. Newton is a forensic and child psychiatrist affiliated with Marquette General Hospital in Marquette, Michigan.

Dear Dr. Kane,

I am writing to wish you and your staff a happy and healthy new year in 2006. I have been on your comprehensive treatment schedule for 8 months, and I am tremendously well. I am unequivocally pleased with the results.

Dr. Kane, when I came to see you and asked you to be my physician, I was a 50 year old, “old feeling man” and physician. I had the pleasure of working along side of you at the local hospital and I had listened carefully to your tutelage about this “anti-aging, anti-obesity type of medicine.” One day I made the decision to come to you, not as a physician colleague, but as a patient in order to seek your guidance and help.

Prior to seeing you and starting your comprehensive therapy regimen, I was a 50 year old who felt and looked at least 10 years older than my stated age. I was lethargic, over weight, had developed high blood pressure, cardiac blockage, carpal tunnel syndrome and overall “falling apart at the seams syndrome”. I was a 50-year-old M.D., Child Psychiatrist, whose zest for life was down and “sinking fast”. As an intelligent man and physician, I knew I needed to exercise more and eat less; as we have all been told. However, prior to starting your therapy, I could never seem to maintain that schedule or mind set long enough to “stay with it”. I would become sad and irritable and self-defeating and quit and then attempt to “eat away my sorrows and self pity”. Dr. Kane, prior to starting your comprehensive therapy program, my exercise tolerance was nil, and I had trouble walking up more than 2 flights of stairs without being out of breath. I felt incredibly inadequate and self-conscious about “going to gyms to work out”, since I was overweight and bouncy like Jell-O. But now, Dr. Kane, my life has changed and I have you to thank for that.

I have been on your comprehensive therapy program of exercise and low glycemic diet which is supplemented by your hormone replacement therapy, and your psycho-pharmaco-therapy (medication management) and treatment for depression and my Adult ADD for the past eight months and I feel great! I both deeply appreciate and in fact look forward to our monthly therapy sessions, which we have on the phone, since I live 750 miles away. I feel great now! I’ve lost 25 pounds of fat and have “muscled up nicely”. I feel and look 20 years younger than my stated age. My carpal tunnel syndrome is gone (I was told by an orthopedic surgeon that I would need surgery-not any more). My high blood pressure is completely gone and normalized. My sexual drive is back; my zest for life has never been higher. My exercise tolerance is great and I am in fact preparing for our local “Ore to Shore” half marathon this coming summer. I am also planning to climb the Matter horn mountain within the next 18 months. Previously, I lacked the energy and the attitude to exercise much. I felt embarrassed to go to a gym because I was “fat and bouncy” and could hardly catch my breath. Now I am “maxing out” the original exercise program that you medically, Rx, prescribed to me which was (a) aerobic, and (b) strength training twice per week.

I now have a mountain bike and a triathlon bike, with which I am training daily and absolutely religiously. As you know we have over 200 inches of snow up here in the winter so I brought my bikes indoors and use them in a stationary fashion at least twice daily. I work out at the YMCA 3 times per week and I purchased a Bowflex gym and have two 25-pound free weights that I use for strength training exercises now encompassing 5 hours per week. I am doing repetitive mountain-waterfall Ice Climbing this winter and am maxing out on “chin up and pull over shoulder exercises” to prepare for that 15,000 foot ascent. Even If I prove unsuccessful, I will nevertheless be much more healthy for having tried; which would have never happened prior to your therapy program.

DR. Kane, as you and I are both psychiatrists and physicians, we both understand the heuristics of “what is depression”. I previously did not think I was depressed. When you suggested to me, “Norris I think you have clinical depression”, I accepted your suggestion “passively out of respect for you being a physician”, but I did not truly believe I was. Now with your treatment and therapy my depression is gone, or at least “under wraps”. I can now see how much more positive my life is versus then.

Dr. Kane, the long and short of it this: May God bless the excellent work that you are doing, and thank you tremendously for giving me my life back.

I am even more incredibly thankful for the same help that you have given my two parents ages 73 and 74. Both my elderly parents are on your comprehensive therapy program of low glycemic diet, exercise, and hormone replacement therapy. Both my mom and dad are doing wonderfully. Each of them have lost some obesity, each ahs gained muscle mass, erased much of their depressive “doom and gloom”. Each of their cardiac conditions and high blood pressure conditions has improved greatly. More amazingly, Dr. Kane, my mother’s Alzheimer’s Disorder is improved.
I will be traveling from upstate Michigan and my parents will be traveling from Tennessee this May to come to Bloomington in order to see you for our annual examinations. Please accept our gratitude for your excellent medical care.

Sincerely Yours,

Norris L. Newton Jr., M.D.
