12/6/2007 You Could Have Trillions of Friends
The friends I’m referring to are pretty small, so small you need a microscope to see them. They are the trillions of microorganisms which colonize the surfaces and cavities of our bodies. They can make up three to five pounds of total body weight. The good ones are also known as beneficial flora. These friends help enhance our immune systems, are agents of detoxification, promote mineral absorption, support production of B vitamins (especially folic acid and biotin) and vitamin K, their enzymes help promote protein and carbohydrate digestion, they produce lactic acid necessary for digestive processes and colonic pH balance, maintain healthy bowel transit time, sustain suitable serum lipid and blood pressure levels, and support normal inflammatory response. They also metabolize and recycle hormones, including estrogen, thyroid hormones, and phytoestrogens from food sources which can help offset symptoms of menopause, PMS, and perimenopause. Probiotics is the term referring to foods or supplements containing these live beneficial microbes or their spores.

Of course not all microbes are friendly. When I was much younger there was a day spent wandering with friends with in nearby woods. The hot summer sun made a cold, clear, pebble bottomed stream look like a good place for a cool drink of water. We all drank our fill and we all came down with a raging case of intestinal flu. Other un-friendly invaders including bacteria, viruses, fungi, and protozoans are implicated in heart disease, allergies, asthma, skin disorders, obesity, IBS, digestive problems, urinary tract infections, maybe even Alzheimer’s. Disease causing bugs in the gut compete with beneficial microbes already in residence. Daily probiotic use promotes disease prevention by keeping the beneficial flora in the majority. A ratio of 85% friendly to 15% unfriendly is currently accepted nutritional thinking.

Modern life in the quite antiseptic, chlorinated, pasteurized, sterilized, irradiated western world, kills the friendly and unfriendly alike with its strong measures. Modern medical practice also makes use of an arsenal of broad-spectrum anti-biotics which don’t discriminate between the bad and the good. Many of the good guys end up dead and don’t get replenished. In the 1930’s anti-biotics began to be commonly used and as each new drug was introduced, resistance to that drug followed. Today we can experience strains of TB and other serious conditions such as MRSA which can evade all but the most powerful drugs. So now 70 years after we discovered anti-biotic drugs, mankind is perhaps significantly threatened by their overuse. Are we now seeing that treating every ear infection with anti-biotics has a point of diminishing return? Back in the 1950’s doctors commonly prescribed probiotics between courses of anti-biotics. For unexplained reasons this practice is now rarely used. Unfortunately there is a segment of the medical community that dismisses probiotic supplementation as alternative quackery. Have you ever been given advice concerning what to do after a course of anti-biotics?

Like most microbes, beneficial bacteria can be inhaled, ingested through the air, or acquired by touch. Fermented foods like sauerkraut, kefir, kim chee, tempeh, and yogurt contain active beneficial bacteria. The first beneficial bacteria in our gut (Bifidobacterium infantis) are introduced through our mother’s breast milk during the first days of life, to help digest sugars. I personally enjoy Helios Organic Plain kefir almost every day. One cup by the way includes 9 grams of protein, 12 carbs, 320 mg of calcium, 72 IU’s of D3 and only 120 calories. Kefir is the most favorable milk product for those with genetically stipulated lactose intolerance. For those with reason to lower their cholesterol levels, kefir has been shown to be helpful. The plain version is a little tart for some but others have described it as refreshing. Try it!

We have a very convenient probiotic supplement to add to your natural food sources. We are now carrying Thorne Research Lactobacillus Sporogenes. Because this product is in the spore form with a protective coat it can survive the very acidic stomach environment and reach the small intestine. It also is designed to be semi-resident in the GI tract to provide maximum benefits. Other probiotics require refrigeration and have questionable shelf life. Lactobacillus Sporogenes is stable without refrigeration, making it ideal for travelers. We recommend an initial loading of two capsules per meal for 10 days and then one capsule per day thereafter.

Lactobacillus Sporogenes, originally isolated and described in 1933, is a gram-positive, spore forming, lactic acid producing bacillus. The organism requires a complex mixture of organic substrates for growth, including fermentable carbohydrates and peptides. After oral ingestion it passes through the stomach in its spore form and upon arrival in the duodenum, it germinates and multiplies rapidly, usually in four hours. After germination L. Sporogenes is metabolically active in the intestines producing lactic acid.
Considered semi-resident, the spores are slowly excreted via the feces for about seven days after discontinuance. Even though of transient residence, this bacillus changes the intestinal environment in support of a complex, beneficial, gastrointestinal flora.

Oral ingestion of 360 million spores a day decreased total serum cholesterol from an average of 330 mg/dL to 226 mg/dL in 17 subjects with type H hyperlipidemia over a three month period, with HDL increasing slightly .It has also been reported that the efficacy of treatment in patients with bacterial dysbiosis was 30% higher than treatment with traditional probiotics such as Lactobacillus acidophilus or Bifidobacteria. Chronic constipation in 70% of those trialed with 300-750 million spores per day for two to ten days experienced a lessening of abdominal distension and a normalization of stools. Non-specific vaginitis was also investigated. Complete relief of pruritis and discharge was reported by 93% of the subjects, although postmenopausal subjects had a slower response to therapy.

Here is a recipe using kefir:

Basil Helios Organic Plain Kefir Dip

½ pound fresh basil, blanched
1 pint of Plain Helios Kefir
2 tbsp fresh lemon juice
Seas salt and pepper to taste

Thoroughly blend all of the above and refrigerate until well chilled. Then serve with sliced green or red peppers, sliced cucumbers, broccoli, cauliflower, zucchini, cherry tomatoes, sliced apples, assorted olives, flaxseed crackers, almonds, and pecans. This is a really tasty vegetable dip.
